Abstract
The purpose of this study was to develop Children¡¯s Self-Encouragement Scale and to exmine its validity and reliability. A pilot study was conducted to collect items regarding cognition, behavior, and affect of children¡¯s self-encouragement. One-hundred seven items were collected from 517 children. A survey consisting of the items were administered to 575 children. Of the items, 19 items were deleted on the basis of item analyses. On the basis of the results of principal component analyses (varimax rotation), 126 items were selected and were grouped into 3 subscales (cognition 68 items, behavior 44 items, and affect 14 items). Each subscale were further divided into sub-factors. Correlations between total scores and scores of sub-factors were significant. Such results supported the construct validity of the scale. Also, the correlations between scores form the children¡¯s self-encouragement scale and those from Self-reported measure of Soothing Receptivity were found significant. Such results supported the concurrent validity. In addition, the reliability of this scale was analyzed through Cronbach alpha and split-half reliability, which were found significant. These findings imply that the Children¡¯s Self-Encouragement Scale be reliable and valid and that it be useful in research of self-encouragement and counseling with children.
